It’s Hard To Get A Job If You Have A Criminal Record

If you have been charged with a felony, you know how hard it is to get a job. A criminal record not only can land you in jail, but it can destroy other parts of your life too.

And even something like DUI charges or a past DWI can cause financial hardship for you down the road as you set up to establish yourself professionally.  In this article, we will talk about what jobs are willing to hire a felon or someone who has a felony on their criminal record. We will also talk about what you can expect when you are applying for a job with a felony on your record.

PRO TIP: Read our post to learn which DWI lawyers should I hire 2022! We know it will be super helpful.

Tips To Keep in Mind When Applying For A Job

These are a few things that you should keep in mind when you are a felon and dealing with the challenging situation of trying to get a job.

  • You should apply to any job you want
  • Do not become discouraged if the company does not hire you. Companies hire felons all the time. Do not give up!
  • If you are asked about having a criminal record, have a response prepared in advance so you are not caught off guard
  • Consider speaking to a professional coach to prepare for your interview
  • Work on building up your work history.  If you have work history, ensure that it is a solid work history. If you have a decent work history and a felony, companies are more likely to consider you anyway.
  • Ensure that you are calling companies back that you applied for. You may want to consider doing up to ten a day. After all, getting a job with a felony on your record is harder than someone who does not have a felony.

Let us now talk about some jobs that will be easier to obtain and that you should consider if you have a criminal record.

Popular Careers To Consider If You Have A Criminal Record

There are many excellent job opportunities to learn a skill that do not require a background check. Now keep in mind, if you are looking to do something like become a law enforcement officer, a job such as that will require a background check and you’ll need to scratch that one off your list at least for the time being. However, just because you were arrested at one point doesn’t mean that you won’t have ample opportunities to find a great job.

Here are some ideas for pursuing a career

The best thing you can do is to work for yourself. As an entrepreneur, you will be the one calling the shots. And if you are ready to branch out professionally and begin a fulfilling life for yourself, starting a business is a great way to do that! And unless you plan to run a background check on yourself, you have nothing to worry about!

It’s a wonderful idea to consider this type of profession if you have a criminal record. That is not to say that construction companies or roofing companies often have felons working for them. That is not the case at all. However, learning a trade that does not require you to have a clean background is a great goal and you can build on it and have a successful career.

Roofing and construction is demanding work. However, many roofing and construction companies are small businesses. In fact, they often hire based on skill set and rarely conduct background checks.. All they look for is the skills needed to complete the job. All you must do is have an excellent work ethic.

Depending on where you live, you will get excellent pay as a roofer.  Expect a pay scale of anywhere from 25-50 dollars per hour. Bigger cities often are at the higher end of the pay scale.

TIP FOR THIS PROFESSION: If you are unsure about roofing, you may call around and ask to work for free for a few weeks. This will allow you to gain experience and potentially become part of the company. You may also offer to work at a reduced salary for a month while you gain experience. This is an excellent way to build up your resume.

As a mason, you do not need further education. However, as you become more experienced, you may want to further your education for this job. It can help you earn more money. If you obtain a mason job, you will work with someone and be an apprentice.

While this type of work does require certain knowledge and skills, you can learn these skills on the job. It is not something that you can learn overnight either. You will likely start doing items that are easy and repetitive. This could include cutting, breaking, mixing, or applying finish to surfaces. Entering this job without experience, you can expect to be paid around fifteen dollars an hour.

Truck Driving

This is a great job to consider that may not always require a background check. It allows them to be on their own and explore while earning a living. On average, a truck driver earns forty-thousand dollars each year. It is one of the more realistic jobs that can be considered. (Keep in mind this is if you are clean of driving charges. If you have driving charges, it may be more difficult to get a driving job such as a truck driver.)

A trucking company may look for experience. However, not all companies will. In fact, some companies will pay to train you. The most important thing you can do is be honest with your work history and your background.

If you obtain a job as a truck driver, you will need to obtain a CDL. You will also need experience driving an oversized truck. Some companies will help you obtain and learn.

While many trucking companies pay a lot, as a felon, beginning out in trucking, you can expect to earn up to fourteen dollars an hour. You can always move up in the company and earn more as time proves that you are not your charge.

Window Cleaner

If you are not afraid of heights, then this may be a job for you. You can clean windows with a felony on your record. All you will do is clean the glass on commercial buildings. This could include being put into a harness for safety.

As a window cleaner you will use sponges, cloths, and brushes to clean windows. You do not need further education or certifications to begin this job. All you need to do is apply as you would any other job.

For those who are experienced in window cleaning, they can earn up to 19,000 dollars a year. With practice and time you can earn this much too.

Factory Worker

When you apply for a job in a factory, there is generally no prior experience or qualifications. This means that it is an entry-level job. However, factory work is much more physically demanding than other jobs. This is true, however; not all factory jobs are super physically demanding.

When working at a factory, you can expect to be sorting products, operating machines, cleaning areas, or other projects. Keep in mind that factories like to work in teams or lines. This will allow you to get more done in a shorter time. On average, a factory worker can expect to bring home 38,000 dollars per year.

Wrapping Up: Felony Friendly Jobs To Consider

As a felon, it may be harder to get a job. However, you simply are looking in the wrong places. Just because you have made an unwise decision in your life, does not mean that you must suffer the rest of your life. Take the time to call around and find a job. Start off with the few recommendations on this list if you do not know where to start. Be sure that you are being honest with potential employers. This will get you farther than lying. Be upfront about your experience as well. As a felon, getting a job does not have to be difficult. Take the time to know which jobs you could apply for and which jobs you should pursue.
