What to do after being arrested in Tangipahoa Parish?

It depends on the criminal charge you picked up. If you were arrested for a misdemeanor in the city limits of Hammond, Louisiana, then you may have court in Hammond City Court.  Any other charge will go to the Tangipahoa District Court in Amite, Louisiana.

The first court date in a criminal proceeding is the arraignment. You will have an arraignment regardless of which courthouse you are in. If you have been arrested for a misdemeanor or received a summons for a misdemeanor, we may be able to go to the first court date for you.  Having a lawyer there for you at the arraignment is essentially like you being there.  The benefit of the lawyer attending court for you is that you can attend your work or school instead.  However, if you are charged with a felony, you will need to be present at all the court dates, including the arraignment.

After the arraignment in Tangipahoa, you may have a series of court dates, depending on the nature of your criminal charge. The court dates may be scheduled for motions, pretrial conference, status, and trial.  These court dates allow your criminal defense attorney to obtain the reports and determine what evidence the prosecutor has against you.  Then, your attorney can begin to negotiate with the prosecutor to try to get the best possible result in your case.
